Shanghai Expo Will Have Prominent Effects on Energy

Conservation and Emission Reduction

World Expo News, May 9:

Expo 2010 Shanghai will have prominent effects on energy conservation and emissions reduction, said Shou Ziqi, Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission at a press conference held by the World Expo News Center this afternoon.

According to the briefing, in order to put the concepts of “Green Expo” and “Low-carbon Expo” into practice, a total of 1017 vehicles powered by alternative energies have been put into commercial operated both in and out of the Expo site. This is the largest and most diverse use of alternative-energy vehicles on a combined basis. The use of these vehicles is set to conserve roughly 10,000 tons of petrol in addition to cutting 118 tons of harmful chemicals and 28,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Moreover, the Expo deployed solar power technology on a huge scale. With a total installed capacity of about 5 megawatts, this is the largest grid-networked BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) system in Asia. Moreover, about 200,000 LEDs have been employed in the Expo zone, which is also unmatched anywhere else in the world at present.

The World Expo has also deployed a river water source heat pump system with a total installed capacity of 75,000 kW. This type of system has cut costs by 10-30% compared to traditional cool water units fitted with a boiler; compared to air source heat pumps, the use of this system can cut operating costs by over 40% in the summer and over 30% in the winter.

The World Expo Center Building has passed the highest certification for green buildings in China. Its total energy consumption is 80% lower than the value specified in the national energy saving standard. The energy conservation ratio of the building is as high as 62.8%. It is expected to be able to save approximately 2,160 tons of standard coal every year.

Shou told the conference that the implementation of these projects will make for a “low-carbon” Expo. All public transport vehicles used in the site are emission free; carbon dioxide emissions from buildings and lighting are expected to be reduced by 30%.

Shou also disclosed that the World Expo has also made advances in a number of technologies regarding safe drinking water, environment remediation, and waste treatment, and has applied the results. The collection and treatment ratio of rain water in the site is as high as 100%, with the comprehensive utilization ratio thereof being over 30%, and the recycling ratio of construction waste and discards is as high as 100%, with the resource utilization ratio thereof being over 50%.

Shou Ziqi concluded by saying that World Expo was being held at a time when the world is recovering from the international financial crisis, with all nations looking for new modes of economic growth. As a stage for the promotion and application of new advances, the World Expo presents many opportunities for emerging industries. A number of new technologies and breakthroughs in energies, materials and IT exhibited at the World Expo will be sure to drive-on the development of strategic emerging industries after their consequent application and industrialization. At the same time, many ideas, design concepts and methods adopted in the World Expo will also provide opportunities and impetus for the development of intellectual service industries.

Shou firmly believes that the Expo 2010 Shanghai China will provide new opportunities for the application of technological advances and breakthroughs, and provide inspiration and guidance for further technological innovation.
