Ministry of Environmental Protection Issues 2009 World Environment Day China Theme

On April 22, the Ministry of Environmental Protection( hereinafter referred to as the MEP) announced the China theme for the 2009 “June 5^th” World Environment Day - “reduce pollution, take action”.

Relevant personnel at the MEP said that UNEP confirmed the theme of the 2009 “June 5^th” World Environment Day as “Your planet needs YOU! Unite to combat climate change”, which emphasizes climate change and environment change in a wider scope. In order to echo this theme and integrate China’s major tasks in environmental protection, the MEP decided that the “June 5^th” World Environment Day China Theme will be “reduce pollution, take action”, which aims to increase public awareness of pollution prevention and encourage people to get involved in energy-saving and emissions reduction.

The same person at the MEP said that with a focus on pollution prevention and treatment, on World Environment Day the MEP will hold the “June 5^th” World Environment Day Commemorative Conference and the launch ceremony of “Thousands of young environmentally-friendly messengers in action”. It will also hold a high-level forum on “Explore a new environmental protection road with Chinese characteristics” and organize a publicity campaign. Environmental protection bureaus at local levels will conduct a variety of vivid and striking publicity activities to mobilize the public to get involved in and support environmental protection. Publicity and public awareness will pave the way for the fostering of an ecologically friendly society and new means of environmental protection.(source: China website)
